I am Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at University of Milan, where I teach Film history and criticism.

The majority of my research is focused on the cultural history of cinema, with an emphasis on the issues related to sexuality and gender from the postwar period onward. Since my first works on Luchino Visconti, for which I am widely recognized as a leading scholar on this director, I have been combining archival research with philology, film analysis and a reflection on methodology, historiography and inherited academic traditions.

My research interests include censorship, films and politics, film criticism, genetic criticism, film adaptation of literary works, and intertextuality, and my works more or less directly deal with the relationship between institutional figures and forms of power and knowledge, and peripheral, marginal or countercultural forms of production, consumption and interpretation of films.

I am the author of six books, forty articles and more than thirty conference presentations. Most of my articles are freely downloadable from this website.
